Jerez de la Frontera was one of the "Frontier" towns between areas ruled by the Moorish Caliphs and by the Christian Monarchs. "De la Frontera" (on the border). That's where the name came from. De la Frontera" was attached to many of the town names who existed on this fuzzy border. Most scholars will agree that the city is the birthplace of Flamenco, but because of the nomadic nature of the Gypsies, who moved from town to town selling their wares and doing odd jobs, it was soon spread throughout Spain.

• The Camara Obscura : Don't miss the Camara Oscura, situated in the tower at the top of the Palacio de Villavicencio in the Alcazar. The projected views of the city are wonderful, and well worth seeing. Just below the projection room there is an outside balcony with views over the city. Cadiz also has a camera obscura, situated in the Torre Tavira.
• Bodegas : Jerez is world famous for its sherry, and the best-known names all have cellars here. According to the Jerez town web site, there are 19 bodegas in and around Jerez that can be visited. Some of the lesser-known ones are by appointment only, but the best-known ones run regular guided tours that you don't need to book. Try Gonzalez Byass, Sandeman, Pedro Domeque, Alvaro Domeque or Grupo Garvey.
